Photographed next to his 1929 model Curtiss Robin at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, after making a transcontinental flight from Long Beach, California, July 1938; days later, when he was supposed to fly back to California, he instead flew across the Atlantic to Ireland.
