The Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) was used in the final three Apollo missions during 1971 and 1972. The LRV was carried onboard the Lunar Module (LM). Once unpacked, it could carry up to two astronauts, their equipment and lunar samples, and was popularly known as the 'moon buggy'. It was powered by two silver oxide batteries and had a range greater than 35.9km (22.3 miles). It had a length of 3.1m (122.0 in), a wheelbase of 2.3m (90.6 in) and a height of 1.14m (44.9 in). On Earth it weighed 210kg (463lb), but in the one-sixth gravity of the Moon, it weighed only 35kg(77lb). Each LRV was used three times on each mission, once on each day of the mission. The LRV was designed by NASA and manufactured by Boeing and General Motors. The three LRVs remain on the Moon.
