Brown centipede (Lithobius forficatus), X-ray. Also called the common or stone centipede, this arthropod is common throughout much of Europe. It reaches length of between 18 and 30 millimetres, and is up to 4 millimetres across. A centipede's body is divided into segments, each with a pair of legs. The number of segments varies from 12 to over 100. Lithobius centipedes are ground-dwelling hunters. They are blind and so hunt by touch, using their long, sensitive antennae (either side of the head at upper right).
