Colostomy. 18th-century illustration of a colostomy due to a hernia. This is the case of Margaret White from Newington, London. Aged 50, a hernia developed at her navel. Aged 73, this ruptured and she was operated on. Part of the intestines were left hanging out (colostomy) through an opening (stoma) by which she voided faeces for many years afterwards. This artwork is from the fifth edition (1740) of 'The Anatomy of the Human Body' by English surgeon and anatomist William Cheselden (1688-1752). This book was first published in 1713 and was re-issued through 13 editions. It was popular due to being written in English instead of Latin.
