Dolphinfish from Drake's voyages. 16th-century illustration of a commmon dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) observed during a voyage by English corsair Sir Francis Drake in 1586. This fish is also called dorado and mahimahi. Drake's men described it as 'excellent sweet to be eaten'. This image is part of a larger map (see C023/8620) of the attack by Drake's fleet on Saint Augustine on 28-29 May 1586, during his 1585-6 voyage to the West Indies. Saint Augustine is in what is now north-eastern Florida, USA. The larger map and artwork from which this image is cropped was published in 1589 by Italian cartographer Giovanni Battista Boazio.
