It shows a museum-style hall with visitors listening to lecturers on geography, astronomy and chemistry. The bookshelves are titled 'Books of Religious Reference' and 'Books of Scientific Reference'. The portraits above are of Nicolaus Copernicus, Charles Darwin, Baruch Spinoza, and Thomas Paine. The words 'Knowledge is Power' are visible. This chromolithograph, by Joseph Ferdinand Keppler (1838-1894), was published on 10 January 1883 as the centrefold of the magazine Puck (volume 12, number 305).
