Homo naledi. Illustration of the appearance of the extinct hominin Homo naledi, identified from fossils discovered in 2013 in the Rising Star Cave system, South Africa. Announced in September 2015, the discovery was made by a group led by US palaeoanthropologist Lee Berger. The date range of the fossils is not yet known, but the cave in which they were discovered is thought to be no more than 3 million years old. It is thought that an adult male was around 150 centimetres tall and weighed around 45 kilograms. It stood upright and was fully bipedal. The brain was smaller than modern humans, with a volume of between 450 and 550 cubic centimetres.
