Peppered moth (Biston betularia) resting on a tree trunk. Two forms of this moth occur, a dark form (seen here) and a pale form. The dark form became dominant in parts of northern England after the industrial revolution, when trees were covered by black soot. This phenomenon is known as industrial melanism, which is an example of natural selection. The pale form is common throughout most of Britain.
