Carl William Blegen (1887-1971) was an American archaeologist who worked on the site of Pylos in Greece, and Troy in modern-day Turkey. He directed the University of Cincinnati excavations of the mound of Hisarlik, the site of Troy, from 1932-1938. Bronze age Pylos was excavated by Carl Blegen between 1939 and 1952. it is located at modern Ano Englianos, Greece. Blegen called the remains of a large Mycenaean palace found there the 'Palace of Nestor', after the Homeric poems, and dated it to 1300 BC. Linear B tablets found by Blegen clearly demonstrate that the site itself was called Pylos by its Mycenaean inhabitants.
