Illustration of King Philip II of Macedon (382-336 BC). Philip II ruled the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon from 359 to 336 BC. He gained dominance over all of Greece and laid the way for his son Alexander the Great's expansion of the empire. During a battle in 339 BC Philip's leg was penetrated by a lance. This left him lame for the last few years of his life. Philip's tomb, in which he was buried with his wife Cleopatra and their newborn son, was discovered in 1977 undisturbed since antiquity.
