Pluto, New Horizons images. Pluto, a dwarf planet, is considered to be a Kuiper Belt Object, not a true planet. It is thought to be make mostly of rock and ice. It is around 2370 kilometres across and orbits between 4.4 billion and 7.4 billion kilometres from the Sun. In 2015, it will be visited for the first time by a spacecraft from Earth, with the New Horizons spacecraft flyby due to take place on 14 July 2015. These images were obtained by the New Horizons Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) between 1-3 July 2015. The distances were (from left): 14.9 million kilometres, 13.5 million kilometres, and 12.5 million kilometres.
