Butterfly wing scale ridges. Scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) of fractured cross-sections of the ridges forming the upper surface of a butterfly wing scale, with support structures below. The ridges have a laminate (layered) structure that causes the interference that produces the metallic iridescence and sheen seen on a butterfly's wing. This wing scale is from a Morpho butterfly. Magnification for each SEM: x15,300 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
