A pH meter. This measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in soils. A small glass electrode at the end of a steel probe is pushed into the soil being tested. The presence of hydrogen ions changes the electrical potential between a test electrode and standard electrode within the probe - this difference is directly related to the pH (negative log of the concentration of hydrogen ions). The principal purpose is to show the acidity or alkalinity of the soil.
