Sun Island in Almere, which is the Netherlands youngest town, in Flevoland, which was reclaimed from the sea. This planned city is very green, with space heating provided from a nearby combined heat and power plant, and from Sun Island, pictured hear, a circle of solar thermal panels which provides hot water for the residents. Many of the houses have solar PV panels on the roof to generate their own electricity. Zoneiland contains 520 solar panels covering an area of approximately 7000 m2. Annually it provides 9,750 gigajoules of renewable, sustainable energy, equal to 10 per cent of Almere city's total annual energy needs. The rest of the energy is provided by the local power plant in Almere.
