This Magill Endotracheal Apparatus was introduced in 1927. It was designed to deliver a continuous and controllable flow of anaesthetic vapour, such as ether or chloroform, to the patient during surgery. The anaesthetic was delivered into the patient's trachea via a tube, allowing facial surgery to be performed. It was designed by Sir Ivan Whiteside Magill (1888-1986), an Irish born anaesthetist famous for his part in much of the innovation and development in modern anaesthesia.
