Sir Philip Vere Broke (1776-1841) by training his men properly in gunnery - Captain Broke showed that British seamen could do as well as the Americans and in H.M.S. Shannon captured the U.S.S. Chesapeake. Unfortunately the wound he sustained in this action prevented him from being employed again..
