Hedley's Puffing Bill, historical image. This early steam locomotive was built in the period 1813-1814 by the British engineer William Hedley (1779-1843). It was designed for use at the coal mine where Hedley worked, and was extremely heavy (eight tons) and only reached speeds of 8 kilometres per hour. It is thought this locomotive influenced George Stephenson's early designs. It was in use from 1815 to 1862, and was then sold to the Science Museum, London, where it is still on display.
