Salomon de Caus (1576-1626), French Huguenot engineer and architect. De Caus published several works on engineering, including 'Les Raisons des forces mouvantes' (1615). This included details of a steam-driven pump. De Caus also designed gardens for the royalty of Europe in Italy, Austria, England and Germany. After 1620, De Caus worked on sanitation and fountains in Paris as engineer for King Louis XIII. This artwork shows him in 1619 at the age of 43.
