Alexander Solomon Wiener (1907-1976), US haematologist, using a microscope. Weiner studied at Cornell University, and Long Island College of Medicine, qualifying as a doctor in 1930. He carried out research into blood groups, carrying out his work at the Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn where he became head of the blood transfusion division in 1952. He also worked at the Department of Forensic Medicine of New York University School of Medicine, becoming a professor there in 1968. His key work, with Karl Landsteiner, was the discovery of the Rh factor in 1937. They and Philip Levine received the inaugural 1946 Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award.
