Tarantula Nebula. Composite image of the Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070, 30 Doradus) compiled using data acquired from 1999-2006. This emission nebula lies 160,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Dorado. This was created by combining X-ray data (blue) from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, infrared (red) from the Spitzer Space Telescope and optical information from the Hubble Space Telescope. The Chandra data shows gas that has been heated to millions of degrees by stellar winds and supernova explosions. The Hubble data reveals the light from massive stars along with different stages of star birth, including embryonic stars a few thousand years old still wrapped in cocoons of dark gas. Data from Spitzer shows cooler gas and dust that have giant
