Tidal wave. Early 20th Century illustration of boats caught in a tidal wave off the coast of Yokohama, Japan, as a result of the Great Kanto earthquake of 1st September 1923. This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 on the moment magnitude scale. It caused immense destruction in Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, and the surrounding regions. It is thought to have caused over 142,000 deaths. Many buildings collapsed and the ruins were then engulfed by large fires that broke out in the area following the earthquake.
