Viking voyages and settlements. Artwork of the voyages (red arrows) and settlements (pink) established by the Vikings (Norsemen) in the period from the 8th to 11th centuries (the Viking Age). Sailing across seas and along rivers (such as the Rhine, Volga, Don, Dnieper, Dniester, and Danube), the Vikings established settlements across Europe (the Baltic coast, Normandy, British Isles, Spain, Italy, Russia), the Black Sea coast, the Caspian Sea, and as far as Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). Across the North Atlantic, they reached the Shetlands, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, southern Greenland and established Vinland in what is now Newfoundland in North America.
