Broken ballpoint pen. The plastic casing of the ballpoint pen is made from polystyrene. This plastic contains alkane chains with benzene rings as side groups. The bulky benzene rings make it difficult for the polymer chains to slide over each other so polystyrene is brittle, not flexible like polythene, and shatters when placed under excessive pressure.
