This virus (originally novel coronavirus 2012) has been named Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus. It is thought to be similar to the ones that cause SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). A SARS-like virus killed hundreds in 2002 and 2003. This new virus, which first emerged in 2012, is being tracked by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with 139 confirmed cases and 60 deaths as of October 2013.
