Peter Medawar (1915-1987), British immunologist. Medawar was professor of zoology at the University of Birmingham and then University College, London. His research on transplants, including a key paper published in 1951, led to him being jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1960. His Reith Lectures of 1959 were titled 'The Future of Man'. In 1962, he became Director of the UK's National Institute for Medical Research. He was Professor of Experimental Medicine at the Royal Institution from 1977 to 1983. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1949, he was knighted in 1965, and appointed to the Order of Merit in 1981.
