Early disinfection in Germany. 19th-century artwork of the first public institution for disinfection in Berlin, Germany. The need to practice cleanliness to prevent infection and the spread of disease was widely recognised following Louis Pasteur's work on germ theory in the 1860s, and the publication of Joseph Lister's antiseptic principles in 1867. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888.
