Orion constellation, Dunhuang Star Chart. 8th-century representation of the stars in the constellation of Orion (left), as depicted on the Dunhuang Star Chart. This Chinese star chart was among thousands of manuscripts found in the Mogao Caves near Dunhuang in north-western China. Dating from around 700 AD, it consists of 13 panels arrayed from right-to-left on a scroll, showing the positions of 1345 stars. This image shows the fourth (right) and fifth (left) panels. The fifth panel shows the stars in the constellation of Orion: Betelgeuse, Rigel, Bellatrix, Saiph, plus the three stars of Orion's belt (Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka). The Chinese text names the stars.
