Going to the Derby. Front cover of a songbook for the music hall song 'Going to the Derby in a Four-in-hand' (1870). The artwork shows passengers in a horse-drawn carriage on their way to the horse race known as the Derby. The Derby, first run in 1780, takes place on the Epsom Downs, Surrey, UK. A four-in-hand carriage is one drawn by a team of four horses arranged so that a single driver can control all four horses. The music was composed by Alfred Lee (18391906), with lyrics by Frank William Green (1842-1884). The opening verse is at lower centre.
