Chinese oracle bone. Marks on an ox bone used by diviners in China to produce oracles (predict future events). This oracle bone dates from the time of the Shang dynasty that rule China from the 16th to 10th centuries BC. The marks were made with a hot poker. Writing in Chinese script is visible. Such bones are the earliest known examples of writing in China.
