The cangue, a large wooden board fixed around the neck, varied in weight. These are relatively light cangues. The labels on the cangues listed the offender's name, address and the crime of which they had been convicted. The size of the cangue usually meant that the person wearing it would not be able to feed themselves without help from others. This image dates from 1860 to 1890.
