John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), British reformer, philosopher and economist. Mill advocated utilitarianism and women's suffrage. He was brought up and educated by his father to continue his father's work on utilitarianism. Mill was an exceptional student, by the age of three he knew the Greek alphabet and by eight had read the works of Xenophon and Isocrates. In 1819, at the age of thirteen, he was introduced to political economy, studying Adam Smith and Ricardo, later working on their 'factors of production'. His most famous work is 'On Liberty' (1859). 1909 engraving after an 1865 photograph from the studio of John and Charles Watkins.
