Beijing city wall gateway, China. Pedestrians and horse-drawn carts in September 1895 using a gateway in the city wall on the road to the Imperial Palace in Beijing (Peking), China. The Beijing city walls, originally dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, covered nearly 60 kilometres and had numerous gates and watchtowers. This lantern slide, by US explorer and survey photographer William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), was obtained for the World's Transportation Commission, a worldwide survey carried out for the Field Columbian Museum of Chicago, USA. The lantern slides in this collection were hand-coloured with dyes and paints.
