Rodents. 19th-century artwork of a lemming (upper left), a dormouse (upper right), a Eurasian beaver (upper centre, Castor fiber), a coypu (lower left, Myocastor coypus), a black rat (lower right, Rattus rattus), and an Egyptian jerboa (lower centre, Jaculus jaculus). Some of the Latin names, labels, and taxonomy used here are archaic. Artwork from 'Encyclopaedia Metropolitana', an encyclopedia published in London between 1817 and 1845. Thirty volumes were issued in 59 parts, with 22,426 pages and 565 plates. This plate is dated 1833.
