Carnivorous mammals. 19th-century artwork of a polar bear (top; Ursus maritimus), a brown or ring-tailed coati (centre left; here Nasua fusca, now Nasua nasua), a raccoon (centre right; Procyon lotor), and a wolverine (bottom; here Gulo americanus, now Gulo gulo). All these mammals are carnivorous and occur in the Americas. The polar bear is found in the Arctic, with the others found further south. Artwork from 'Encyclopaedia Metropolitana', an encyclopedia published in London between 1817 and 1845. Thirty volumes were issued in 59 parts, with 22,426 pages and 565 plates. This plate is dated 1831.
