Heinrich Pantaleon (1522-1595), Swiss physician. Pantaleon was born in Basle, Switzerland. He originally studied languages and literature, and became a professor at the University of Basle, teaching natural philosophy. His major work was an account of famous Germans, 'Posographia Heroum et illustrium Virorum Germanise' (1565), for which he was made count palatine by Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor. Later in life, Pantaleon qualified as a physician. This woodcut portrait shows Pantaleon at the age of 60, and was published in his work 'Militaris ordinis Iohannitarum, Rhodiorum, aut Melitensium Equitum' (1581).
