Leonhart Fuchs (1501-1566), German physician and botanist. Fuchs wrote a book called 'The History of Plants' (1542) in which numerous plant species were described in detail. A genus of shrubs, the fuchsias, was named in his honour because he described them. He also prepared the first important glossary of botanical terms, which helped pave the way for modern botany. Lithograph from 'Galerie medicale' (1825-1829), a collection of portraits by Pierre Roch Vigneron (1789-1872).
