Horse and rider. High-speed photographic sequence of a silhouette of a rider on a horse (Equus caballus). This sequence, by the British-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904), is from an album of photographs taken in California, USA, from 1872-79. The action runs from left to right starting at the top left. Muybridge pioneered the use of high-speed photogr- aphy to analyse animal and human locomotion. He began his work on high-speed photography when he was commissioned to discover whether galloping horses have all of their feet off the ground at certain times. He proved that they did.
