Early electric lamps, historical artwork. Three types of electric lamp are shown here. From left to right: an internal and external view of a Cance lamp; an internal view of a Sautter-Harle lamp; and an internal and external view of a Jandus sealed-bulb lamp. The lamps are all named for their French inventors. They have electrical contacts at top, and are arc lamps, producing light from an electrical spark crossing a narrow gap between carbon electrodes (spark seen in the internal diagram for the Jandus lamp).
