Local Group galaxy cluster, diagram. The galaxies are shown relative to our spiral Milky Way Galaxy (lower centre). The concentric shells are 500,000 light years thick, and lines show the positions of galaxies above or below the Milky Way's galactic plane. Each type of galaxy is colour-coded: spiral (white), dwarf elliptical (blue), dwarf spheroidal (green) and irregular (pink). The largest galaxies are the Milky Way and the spiral galaxy Andromeda (M31, upper centre). Apart from a smaller spiral galaxy (M33, upper left), the other galaxies are much smaller and cluster around one of the larger galaxies. Closest to (just left of) the Milky Way are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (pink).
