Milky Way. Optical image of the Milky Way running through the constellations Puppis (the poop deck, upper centre), Carina (the keel, lower centre) and Vela (the sails, upper left). North is at top. Carina, Puppis and Vela were once part of the constellation Argo Navis (the Argonaut's ship), but it was split up in the mid-18th century. Canopus (Alpha Carinae), the second brightest star in the sky, is at lower right. The pink area at lower left is the Eta Carinae nebula. In the bottom left corner is the constellation Crux, the Southern Cross. At bottom right is the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way.
