Comet Donati, artwork, 1858. This long period comet was discovered by Giovanni Donati in June 1958. It reached its closest point to Earth at a distance of 0.5 AU ( half an astronomical unit, 1 AU = 1 Earth-Sun distance) on 9 October of the same year. The comet's head was estimated to have a magnitude between 0 and -1.
