Titan. Cassini spacecraft image of haze layers in Titan's atmosphere. Titan is Saturn's largest moon. These layers are in the stratosphere over Titan's south pole. Alternating bright and dark bands are thought to be due to differing haze concentrations, which may be produced by gravity wave motions. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched in 1997 to investigate Saturn, its rings and its moons. This image was taken at a distance of 151,000 kilometres on 14 February 2005.
