The volcanic vent, Pele itself, is just at the top of the wedge of mountains, where the dark fans of erupting matter begin. It is at a temperature of some 380 degrees centigrade. The ejected material falls back over a region of surrounding terrain 1400 km across. This heart-shaped region is only an area of superficial deposits: despite its appearance at first glance, it is not a volcanic cone. By the time of Voyager 2's flyby, four months later, eruptions had filled out the notch at the bottom right of this region.
