Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9/Jupiter collision. Images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of the impact site of fragment G of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which hit Jupiter at 07.28 GMT on 18 July 1994. The images were taken on July 18 in green light (left) and in infrared at the peak of the methane absorption wavelength (right). In the image at left, the site of the impact appears as a dark spot surrounded by two ring-like features. The smaller dark spot just to the left of the inner ring is where fragment D impacted at 11.42 GMT on July 17. In the right-hand image, the same features appear bright instead of dark.
