Jupiter's atmosphere. Coloured near-infrared Galileo spacecraft image of bands of cloud in Jupiter's atmosphere. The clouds are colour-coded: high-level clouds appear red/pink and low-level clouds are blue/white. The clouds seen here form part of a boundary between two atmospheric belt zones in Jupiter's equatorial region. Galileo is the first spacecraft to image different layers of Jupiter's atmosphere. This was achieved by combin- ing images observed by Galileo's solid state imag- ing (CCD) system at three specific wavelengths. Image taken on 5 November 1996 at a distance of 1.2 million kilometres; the smallest resolved features visible are tens of kilometres in size.
