Martian dune analysis. Mars Exploration Rover Spirit used its the left wheel to create a ditch in a Martian dune (centre). It then reversed to allow its miniature thermal emission spectrometer to analyse the composition of the sand beneath the surface. The material in this drift was shown to be basaltic sands, similar to that found elsewhere but, intriguingly, different to that found in the nearby Bonneville crater.
