Lagrange points. Computer artwork illustrating the gravitational libration points (Lagrange points) for a star and an orbiting planet. There are five such points where the gravitational and orbital forces of the two bodies cancel. An object placed at any of these points will remain at rest relative to both the star and the planet. L1, L2 and L3 form a line through the two bodies, while L4 and L5 are 60 degrees ahead and behind in the orbit of the smaller body (here, the planet). In the solar system, asteroids called Trojans are trapped in the L4 and L5 points of the Jupiter-Sun system. Solar satellites have been positioned at some of the Earth-Sun Lagrange points.
