Sundial. Statue of the head and hands of a priest holding a stone sundial on a church wall. The sundial measures time using a shadow formed by the spike (gnomon). The shadow moves across the face of the sundial as the Sun moves across the sky. Each of the scored lines which radiate out from the gnomon denote an hour of the day. The time is read by seeing which line the gnomon's shadow lies on. This is St Mary's Church, North Stoke, Oxfordshire, England. It is either an Anglo-Saxon or a Norman church. The Anglo-Saxons conquered England in the 7th century and were themselves conquered by the Normans in 1066.
