Gateshead Millennium Bridge arch. This bridge (cable-stayed) crosses the River Tyne in England, joining the cities of Newcastle and Gateshead. The arch and its cables are seen here. They support a pedestrian and cyclist walkway (not seen) that is also an arch shape. This allows the bridge to open in a unique way, tilting from the points where it meets the banks, forming a double arch across the river that allows boats to pass underneath. It was designed (from 1999) by the architects Wilkinson Eyre. The bridge is 126 metres wide and weighs 850 tonnes. The entire structure was floated along the river and lifted into place by cranes in November 2000. It was opened on 17 September 2001.
