Refrigerator recycling. Steel chippings produced from a refrigerator that has been crushed and shredded. The steel chippings can then be reused to manufacture other new metal items. Prior to crushing the compressor, coolant (refrigerant) and polyurethane foam are removed. The coolant and foam contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs) chemicals. CFCs are harmful gases that deplete the ozone layer and can trap heat in the atmosphere, which may contribute to the greenhouse effect. Ozone protects life on Earth by blocking the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. International agreements have banned production and encouraged destruction of CFCs. Photographed in West Sussex, England.
